Stripped oil pan drain plug?

I recently bought an out-of-warranty 1999 2.3 LPT 9-5 wagon from an independent dealer. I tried to do an oil change myself over the weekend, but couldn't get the drain plug off. I took it to a shop and they couldn't get it off either without risking making a real mess of it, so they didn't do it.
So, I'm wondering what the best course of action here is. Do I just tell them to go ahead and force it, risking ending up with a dripping, stripped plug, or have it re-bored and use an over-sized plug, or do I bite the bullet and replace the whole pan (how $$$ is that?)?
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Greg
