Timing chains on 2.3 engines have something of a history. Part of the problem was just plain maintenance. Chain quality was an issue, and when the chain supplier was changed the sprockets were hardened - although sprockets didn't wear until the chains were already bad. Late 9000s given good maintenance ... nothing heroic, just quality oil changed at appropriate intervals ... are lasting - well, like Saabs are expected, quarter-million-miles and more. 9-5 motors should do even better, on account of the thinner stemmed, light valves and correspondingly ligher valve springs putting less load on the chain. 9-3 Sport Sedan (and the next generation of 9-5s) are even better off, with roller tappets to further reduce chain loads.
As for vibration at idle --- all 4 cylinder cars with automatic transmissions idle roughly when loaded by the torque converter - as compared to a 6 or 8 cylinder. The proper cure for this is a manual transmission = but -ahem- many of us for whatever reason can not or prefer not to take the cure. Turn up the radio, call someone on the cell phone, and take another bite of the donut, and you won't notice the vib's...
