Well, the SAAB engine is a 2.3 liter 4-cyl, and most 4 cyls don't like to pull below 2,000 rpm anyway, turbo or not. I don't really consider it turbo lag, it's more like low power due to low rpm on a 4 cyl... keep the revs above 2,000 and the engine pulls marvelously! In day-to-day driving I find that I don't usually have to exceed 3,000 rpm while accelerating, the high torque engine is able to make good use of the tall gears.. it's not necessary to wind out the engine, unlike, say, the Hondas I used to drive.
JUST WAIT 'til your future 9-5 is fully broken in (heheh, I'm already predicting you'll get the SAAB) -- it'll likely be much smoother and more powerful than the one you got to test drive!!
I'm surprised your experience at Infiniti was so bad. In 1993 my college roommate almost bought a Honda Accord... at the time, the Infiniti G20 was about the same price, and it was a much nicer car than the '93 Accord, so I told him to give it a try. We test drove it at the Infiniti dealership in Timonium, MD, and had a great experience!
The salesman took us to some back roads, and let us really drive the bejeezus out of that little car. It really stuck to the road...
And so he bought the G20. The afterservice was great too, free Infiniti loaner cars even for oil changes.
Then again, that was 10 years ago! (Damn, time flies)
