Rpm hangs during shifts

My new 2001 Aero Wagon 5 speed (900 miles) has this annoying trait: the engine rpm hangs excessively during shifts. It seems worse when I shift below about 3500 rpm. I didn't pay enough attention during my various test drives to see if this was common. It is more annoying in the lower gears.
I am not shifting especially fast, but the rpm is always too high by the time I release the clutch. For example, at 3000 I get of the gas and put in the clutch. The rpm hangs a moment and starts to drop slowly. By the time I start to release the clutch the rpm is at about 2800. When the clutch engages the rpm gets dragged rapidly down the rest of the way to about 2200. (These figures are approximate.) The engine revs fast when I tap the throttle, so I don't think this is due to the mass of the flywheel. It just seems as if the rpm drop is too lazy. None of my other manual tranny cars ever did this.
Has anyone else noticed this? If it's unusual, what is the cause, and how easy is it to correct? Is there some sort of electronic "dashpot" adjustment that can be changed?
TIA.
