For what it's worth, my 2000 2.3t wagon has a similar "hang" - I don't remember when I first noticed it, but as soon as I was aware of it it seemed quite pronounced - it's an obvious departure from the typical reduction in rpms associated with letting up on the throttle in a manual (e.g., on my '93 900).
