Given the horrendous depreciation on these vehicles, you might want to consider leasing a new vehicle or buying a 2-3 year old Saab. I recently picked up an absolutely mint 2000 9-5 Aero with 39K miles with a full bumper-2-bumper warantee out to April 2007 / 100K miles (certified Saab). I paid 22K and the smile has yet to leave my face. I've learned that these vehicles sell at dealer car auctions for between 15-18K so if you have a friend with a dealer license, offer them $500 to take you to an auction an bid on a car for you. Usually the day before the auction, you (the dealer that is) can check out all the vehicles to find the vehicles you would consider bidding on. The auction per vehicle will last all of 60 seconds. There are tons of these vehicles coming off 3-year leases right now. If there are no issues with the car, a Saab dealership will 'Saab certifiy' it to extend the original factory warantee, for a cost of course. Just be sure to get the VIN so you can carfax any potential vehicles. You also want to check the vehicle's entire maintenance history at a Saab dealership with the VIN before you contemplate bidding. If it hasn't been maintained don't expect the dealership to certify it, because I believe the certifying dealership it responsible for any/all maintenance costs that occur in the first couple months (that's to discourage them from certifying problem cars) These method is a little riskier than buying a Saab certified at a dealership but you'll end up being able to better control the markup on the vehicle. I would estimate I could have saved $1-2K had I gone this route myself. But this knowledge is still very useful regardless. Someone graciously provided me with the selling prices of Saab 9-5's at a recent auction and I was able to leverage that information with the dealer. I basically told them "Look, I know how much you approximately paid for this vehicle, and how much the extended warantee cost (about $1300). Given your prep fees, etc. you're making too much profit off me, so would you accept this instead . . .". That line was able to knock another $800 of the price of the vehicle - they were quite shocked to see the April auction results in my hand. The more you know, the less you'll pay.
Happy hunting,
Kevin
