Here is opinion, for what it is worth...... I have both engines. The v6 in the 9-5se and the I4 in a '98 9000. Both cars have approximately the same mileage, plus or minus 70k. Granted it's two different cars, but here are my thoughts...
The v6: Pros - good low end torque, nice throaty engine rumble. Cons - gas mileage averages at about 24mpg (if that's bad?), and limited feel of a turbo. The timing belt was changed for free by the dealer.
I4: Pros - Great gas mileage, avg about 28mpg, and awesome power from the turbo. Very smooth running, quiet, no engine vibration. Cons - None. But, this is the 225hp I4, now 250hp in the aero.
Speaking technically, I've been told the I4 engine is bullet proof. One possible reason is because the block is cast with high amounts of nickel added. This might only be important if you put a half million miles on or so. Not sure. The v6 engine definitely feels American.
Having owned and maintained both, our next Saab will probably be an Aero with the 250hp I4. Otherwise, it will be another v6. In my opinion the v6 offers a noticable power increase over the base I4.
