I think to some extent, everyone looks at reliability. I loved the Saab when I looked at it, but strongly considered a Nissan because I believe them to be more reliable. If not for one statement by Consumers Reports, that the reliability rose from average to above average, which I saw as a good sign, I might not have made the decision I did.
I also could have purchased a 1999 for less money, but went with the 2000 because it seems to have held up better.
I agree that there are other factors and each person has to decide what's important, but unless you are leasing and will be under warranty the entire time, reliability always plays a part to some extent.
