Well the V6 has GM origins - minus the Turbo we see it in various 2.5/3.0 ltr guises in the Vauxhall/Opel Vectra (the 9-5 shares many components with this vehicle) and the Vauxhall/Opel Omega in Europe.
Having driven many, many miles behind these V6 lumps, whilst smooth they are pretty gutless hence Saab adding a turbo. It is my experience that close to a 100k miles they tend to get a bit tired - rattle a lot and start to drink oil.....I can't honestly see one doing the 200k+ miles that the I4 lumps do.
Let's face it the I4 Saab engines were probably over engineered - everything is way bigger than it really needs to be - the evidence is the fact that most of the lumps can be tuned to nearly twice their original outputs and still maintain complete reliability.
The GM V6 is from a much more recent eran - everything is just strong enough and only just - no extra margin and hence longevity suffers.
Personally speaking I just love the technical elegance of the Saab I4 - simple, robust, reliable, powerful and smooth - DI Cassette failure should be viewed as one of those things that might just happen once in the engines life.
Your call I guess
