I hadn't heard this before. Does this only go for the original owner of the car (I bought mine used)? Is it only on newer model-year vehicles?
I've been surprised to average about 26-27 mpg in my '99 SE V6 (and I go up and over an 1,800 foot mountain pass every day on my way to work).
I still think the biggest disadvantage of the V6 over the I4 is the handling of the car... the I4 has less weight over the front end and just seems a heck of a lot more nimble on curvy roads. If you drive a lot of freeway miles, it's an awesome powertrain, though. The 9-5 is one of the best long-distance cruisers out there, IMHO, with either engine.
I can't speak to overall reliability, but my car now has about 55k miles on it and hasn't had any engine problems other than a random thermostat failure that was covered under warranty.
