Oil capacity, owner's manual vs. dipstick

I notice that when I pour in the amount specified in the owner's manual ("refill capacity, at oil and filter change=4.1 L") the oil is just slightly overfilled according to the dipstick.
What I'm actually pouring in is 4.034L:
(four 1 qt bottles, or 946 mL*4) + 250 mL = 4034 mL
Perhaps Mobil 1 bottles are closer to a liter than a quart (946 mL) but I doubt it?
I saw this happen on my '88 9000T too.
So which is correct, the manual or the dipstick? Next time I'll just pour in 4 quarts and see where this lands me on the dipstick...
