I spoke with the GM program manager at the 2003 NAIAS (Detroit Auto Show). They are very proud of what they've been able to do with the "W" platform (this is the third iteration). There's like 90% new parts down under. They feel they can out-handle things like Nissan Maximae, etc. They also are proud of how far they've brought that old iron motor, and on a power-to-weight basis and fuel economy basis, they are competitive with anything in the field.
Mrs. G's Olds Intrigue is vastly improved over the Cutlass Supreme she had previously, and the new GP should be better than that.
I'd be most concerned about things like how the seat feels after a couple of hours driving (do take advantage of the "24 hour test drive"), how the relationship of pedals to seat to steering wheel fits you, are you comfortable with the visibility, etc. I think the big things: handling, brakes, motor, transmission, should be just fine (unless you get a bad one).
