Hi David,
I notice a little driveline lash as well on our '01 SE. It is more noticeable when I apply the throttle harder after coasting, while it can be eliminated if I am gentle getting on/off the gas. And yes, I do notice it is more prominent when I am driving in 3rd gear. I don't worry about it much, and it doesn't bother me: I feel it is an ok tradeoff for an automatic transmission that is so very responsive.
As for the engine braking, the car is designed to do that when your coasting at certain speeds in 3rd gear. I use third gear on purpose for that reason where I live (a particularly hilly/twisty part of Austin). It helps me control the car without having to ride the brakes or downshift much.
Unlike many american cars, this auto likes to remain in lockup when coasting above certain speeds, which makes it feel like engine braking- it makes the car more responsive (and probably causes some of that lash you feel). Other transmisssions will be continually alternating between lockup, frewheeling, and fluid-coupled modes in the same situation.
