tow truck driver may have toasted my trans

My DI seems to have failed and i had the car AAA towed to my home where, after reading this board, i should be able to do the task easily enough.
When the tow truck driver went to put the car in neutral to back the car up to load on the flatbed, he jammed hard on the shifter to get it out of gear. I told him that the key had to be turned to the on position to unlock the trans. He said something under his breath.
Then he wanted to take the key out and i said the lever had to be in reverse, so he proceeded to jam hard the lever to put it in reverse, i hollered that there is a release under the knob. Again, some mumbling.
He hands me my key and starts to load the car - i said that this was just going to drag the car, why not keep it in neutral with the key. He said fine and i put the car in neutral.
After he unloaded the car - he left pretty damn quick. As we were pushing the car into place, i noticed that moving the gear shift is really screwed up now, it has trouble finding first and second, like the gap isn't there anymore to get it over there to first or second.
Is it possible it feels like this because the car isn't started, i've never moved the gear shift around without the car running. Also, after he left there was this awful, burning plastic type smell? Any ideas?
What should my next course of action be?
