He was running on cruise the same speed each time... so the power produced would be exactly the same regardless of what fuel he used, ignoring other variables.

The advantage to higher octane is that it is more resistant to preignition/detonation so you can run more boost = more power without damaging engine parts. Not a consideration at cruise.

There has been a lot of discussion regarding lower octane fuels actually containing more energy (BTUs) per gallon. I can see that since the additives used to increase octane create fewer BTUs than pure gasoline, and high octane fuels have more additives than "regular" gas. Therefore, you should be able to produce less regular gas to produce the same amount of energy as premium (up to the point that detonation sets in).

However, a one time trip isn't a scientific study. Could be just coincidence that regular gas was used at the same time as the reported higher mileage. Tire pressure, weather, load carried, etc. can all make a difference. Try it every weekend for a year, alternating fuel types. The repeated tests will help nullify the variables as much as possible. Still not scientific but closer.
