Under steady-state driving conditions, its not the octane per se that gives higher/lower mileage, but rather the recipe for the gasoline itself. If MTBE or ethanol is blended into the base gasoline by the gasoline manufacturer to achieve higher octane, there is less BTUs available, hence lower mileage.
However, as others have said, there are a variety of variables which influence mileage. In fact, gasoline blends can vary in energy (read: BTU) content up to 8% (this from a California pre-reformulated gas study). With lower gasoline volatility in the summer, more of the dense hydrocarbons (called "aromatics") are used, resulting in about a 1-2% higher energy content then winter gasoline.
I guess we'll all have to go on more road trips to get enough data points to give us a better SWAG at the affects...
