Shari---Saab has an undeserved bad reputation regarding reliability. I (and several others who post here) believe most "Saab stories" are dealer problems. You absolutely must have a good mechanic; one who truly loves Saabs. They are wonderful cars and the 9-5 is the best ever. Even Consumer Reports, who has been anti-Saab for a long time, now recommends it. As noted by others, most of the problems for the 9-5 came early in the first model year (1999). I waited to buy a 2000, and it has been trouble free and truly a joy to drive.
You don't say where you are in California, but I believe there is a dealer in the San Jose area who is highly regarded---if someone here would come up with the name, maybe you could go there when the car needs servicing. There should be plenty of warranty left on the car you are considering. You might want to find out why it is for sale, just in case it is one of the few "lemons" around. As for price, without knowing the model and equipment, it's hard to say. Good luck!
