As others have said, the 99's (like mine) experienced some teething
problems. Once I got those sorted, the car has been rock-solid and
squeak and rattle free - I'm just about to hit 50,000 miles in
just under 36 months. In addition to CR liking the 9-5, JD Power
2001 Initial Quality survey puts the 9-5 FIRST in the mid-luxury
class, ahead of the 5-series and E class.
And based on my experience with the 9-5, you'll enjoy the fuel
economy as Bay Area gasoline prices are generally higher than most
other locations (at least that's my experience when I travel out
there). I get around 31MPG at steady highway driving, with the 2.3
engine and 5 speed. Don't know if you can actually cruise on 280/880/680
101 with all the traffic, but even in combined driving, I get around
27MPG.
