Hey, look, I *love* Saabs, and I believe they are safe. My wife and I have put more than 400,000 miles on our pair of 9000Ts, and we're looking forward to a 9-5 wagon (maybe two!). So, I'm on your side about the cars.
But this doesn't change the fact that the numbers you quoted are meaningless. If you combine the huge differential between (a) the number of Saabs vs. VWs and (b) the demographics (mainly age and income) of Saab-owners vs. VW owners (people in their teens and 20's have accidents much more frequently do people in their 40s and 50s; people who make more money have fewer accidents than do those who make less money), you would *expect* the Saabs to have many, many times fewer deaths just because of who their owners are.
Of course, I believe that the Saabs are safer and there is evidence to suggest that. But there's no reason to weaken Saabs superior reputation by misusing statistics to make claims that aren't justified by them ;-)
But I agree with you about good Saabs are!
