VI modifiers become less effective in high shear/high temperature conditions (HTHS)- that means, inside the bearings. M1 5W40 is around 20% higher in those regions. Also the M1 5W40 is *not* an ILSAC GF "starburst" oil, meaning it has a higher load of anti-wear zinc dithiophosphates than is allowed under ILSAC GF standards.
The only downside to M1 5W40, for those who keep score, is the absense of ACEA A3/B3 certification, replaced instead by API CI-4 (diesel) and SL (gasoline) certifications. Label readers can get the best of all worlds from Amsoil 5W40, which meets ACEA A3/B3 as well as API CI-4, API SL, and GM LL 025 A and B. I think that M1 would also meet ACEA and GM LL specs if Mobil chose to pay for the tests, but there is quite a gap between "I think" and "has shown."
