Well, you do _not_ have a complete GPS nav system in your car, only an antenna and a receiver. I believe there is no built in gps computer or information display that will let you see where you are - the OnStar box merely sends the satellite coordinate data back to OnStar HQ, where your position is calculated and plotted on a computer map. Someone correct me please, if this info is incorrect!
This is not to say that someone couldn't add a GPS nav unit to the car, using the existing antenna...only that you can't expect that much from the existing OnStar hardware.
Personally, I would rather have a nice color GPS nav system than OnStar, but we don't really have that choice. The Saab "safety lawyers" want to push the dubious safety benefits of the system rather than the day to day utility of a mapping system. I just learned that Audi is also going to offer OnStar in its full line of cars in the near future. Phooey!
I use a Magellin MAP330 on trips - it's a sweet portable device that is very reasonable in cost and software upgradable. They have just released a new Topo CD for the USA with topographic maps you can upload into the unit. Very handy for hikers and bikers.
