You're right in asking "why would they do this?". I believe what this is doing is adjusting the base startup volume. Maybe... this is a big maybe... they do this by allowing adjustment of the amplifier gain.
If that is true (speculation again) then perhaps they're doing it by changing input impedence on the amplifier.
Then... if THAT is true tooo we have to ask. If you lower the input impedence on the amplifier in your home system, does that make the system sound better? I would think that this would only be true if the input impedence was too low to begin with.
Maybe... another big maybe... adjusting the startup volume adjusts the fixed gain from the preamp (this is the second amplifier that you were asking about by the way).
This raises the question again, is driving a stronger signal from the preamp to the amplifier going to improve your sound? If the distance from the amplifier to the preamp is long then increasing the voltage between the two would help sound quality. There is also a possible negative side effect of this. Sometimes gain is lower to allow for a better dynamic range. It is possible that what may sound good overall because the gain is higher can cause distortion in some of the stronger dynamics such as possible from a CD. Think about the Beatles' Revolution. That distortion you hear is from John Lennon raising the gain to the point where he was overloading the inputs at the recording studio. Just some whacky thoughts for folks to ponder (and most likely bash me) on.
