amplifiers are designed to see a certain amount of signal(gain) for optimized sound.. in this case you have a head unit with a preamp section that sends a signal in the form of voltage to a separate power amplifier...
if the signal (gain) from the preamp does not contain enough voltage or gain. then you'll hear too much "noise" and the music will lack any dynamic range/punch, etc.. On the other hand, if the signal is too high from the preamp/headunit.. then the power amp will clip or distort that signal (not be louder as some believe)... So the goal is to send the power amp just the right amount of signal ..
most systems have a gain adjustment located on the power amp.. not the head unit(though some do). It really makes little sense, and would seem to defy all logic to have this startup volume also serve as a gain setting..
I have turned the setting all the way down to zero.. and the sound still comes through strong and clear in terms of noise levels and dynamics.. so I would agree with the other folks who question the validity of this setting...
....though I will confess , back in the earlier days I did lean towards believing it did alter the gain as well !!!
