Yes I do like the look ;)
I use them alone occasionally in really _really_ dense fog (Maine is not the leader in fog production - you share that spot with Western WA) without the headlights - they do a better job of illuminating the road without throwing up a brilliant reflective wall in front of you. They will operate with the high beams on.
Downsides:
They come on only in number 2 and 3 switch positions, so you have to have at least the parking lights on.
If you run with them on in the 2 position, you can forget to turn them off when you exit the car, since the car thinks that only the parking lights are on (no audible chime). My Audi is smarter than this - it resets the switch to off each time.
They really are crappy lights in the first place! Aftermarket Hellas are so much better!
Some folks may not be able to enable the feature - I think it is year dependent like the Upshift Light issue. It works for 2000 and 2001 Aeros.
I gained some sort of Euro city light when my car was reprogrammed - a low wattage bulb in each headlight now comes on with the fogs. It is pretty but not useful to me.
Check out all the past posts from Norm - he is gone now, but contributed much useful info to the boards. Also do a search for "foglights" to read more discussion on this subject.
