For Saab, the OnStar system is installed in the ports when the cars arrive from Sweden. In the 2000 model year, it was a complete installation. We chose to do this rather than offer it as a dealer install to control the quality of the installation. GM products went to a factory installation for the same reason.
For Model Year 2001, the factory installs the wiring so that the port installation is a near, plug and play. The shark fin antenna is not only a cellular antenna, but also houses the GPS antenna.
There is also a generation difference between the 2000 and the 2001. The 2000 system for example will not support Personal Calling. This feature enables the user to make hands free phone calls using the OnStar equipment.
Because of this situation, unfortunetly we do not offer an aftermarket solution. With regards to the value of OnStar, it is pretty incredible to be at one of OnStar's call center and listen in to a call come in from another part of the country when a customer was involved in a car accident. Within minutes OnStar had the local 911 center on the line giving them the exact location of the accident and was able to discribe the car involved. It is cheap piece of mind insurance.
