Thanks for the support - we actually bought the car as a replacement for a 2000 Jetta vr6 that was rapidly degrading into a lemon. Having shopped around extensively and test-driven almost all of the 9-5's peers we came to the conclusion that if we could get close to invoice on the car that there simply wasn't anything out there to touch it value-wise.
I only discovered saabnet two days b4 we went in to buy but everything I have read so far only reinforces our decision.
Just to give you an idea of the diverse cars we drove in arriving at our decision here is a quick synopsis:
Volvo v70t, the closest competitor we found - turn-offs were the baulky looks and size, pricey options packages and bad trade-in offer on Jetta
Mercedes C320 wagon, small, pricey, abominable blind-spot that made merging on to freeways a nervous breakdown inducing experience and did I say pricey. Shame that they don't offer any of the other Euro models over here.
Volvo v40, too damn small, but cute...
BMW 325i sportwagon, the ultimate driving machine, NOT, more like 'slowwagon' or 'shitewagon', the thing was dog slow - couldn't believe it.
Audi A4 1.8t Avant, this would have been my first choice due to all the chipping options but Lydia absolutely hated it! Especially when she found out that it is under the ungodly VW umbrella.
Audi A6, BMW 5 series sportwagon, Benz E series wagons - all too pricey really, didn't even test-drive - certainly not the bargain that the 9-5 is
That was about it for choices: we drove the 9-5 and were instantly impressed by the looks, pick-up, handling and quality. I think what sealed the deal for me was the JD Power initial quality report - 8th overall - that is very impressive. Having just got out of one lemon it was vital for us not to get into another one. Despite her initial reservations about graduating to a wagon I am happy to report that Lydia is thrilled to bits with her new ride!!
