The Explanation for why they fail: Heat, because of a bad design.
It is mounted in a very hot location, second or third to the turbo/exhaust manifold and radiator. Heat kill electronics.
If you want a quick example, since we're all using a computer, pull off the fan that is on your CPU and see what happens. First the computers performance will degrade, run slower, as the chip gets hot and then it will fail. Just like the DIC.
My first thought, when I found out all of the electronics for the ignition was on top of the engine, was this was designed by a reject electrical engineer (who I would never hire) and was he also involved with the NASA probe that crashed into the Utah desert.
My wifes '99 DIC failed at 36K, four houses away from home. The 9-5 was not run hard, the daytime temp was 70 degrees F, and the car was cold. When she called me at work and stated that smoke came from the valve cover, I knew right away it was the DIC.
