In this case, it sounds like the compression was bad and the blow by gases overwhelmed the PCV system. In a severe situation, no PCV setup would stand up to this. And high blow by gas flow rates will discharge oil mist through the PCV system into the intake. It has been suggested that the oil mist would then trash the octane of the AF mixute and that that might explain some knocking and resulting Aero piston cracking.
Off boost (manifold vacuum) with compression problems at the rings would cause oil consumption up through the rings.
So I think there is more than one thing going wrong. And in some cases, engines with loose head bolts might be leaking gases past the HG into the oil side of the engine.
