according to the info below in model year 2000 the 9-3 engines were changed to the T7 205l and 205r engines. i would guess but am not sure that the 204 engines are not at risk like the 205 engine. does anybody know for sure?
(info from saab edu website)
A new engine is being introduced on the 9-3 for
model year 2000. The B205R engine replaces the
B204R in the 9-3. Principally the engine is a
modified 9-5 B205E basic engine. Just like on all
"generation 4" engines, the engine management
system is Trionic 7.
The B205R delivers the same torque (280 Nm) as
the earlier B204R but at a slightly lower engine
speed. The torque on 205R engines with manual
gearbox has been limited to 230 Nm in reverse
and 1st gear. Cars with B205R engines and
automatic transmission deliver 250 Nm. The
B205R is now available with automatic
transmission thanks to the gearbox being
reinforced. Compared with the 9-5 B205E,
certain modifications have been made to the
basic engine. See the section "Modifications to
basic engine".
All B205R engines fulfill environment
requirements for LEV (Low Emission Vehicle),
which means that:
• Twin catalytic converters with new and
improved thank integrity diagnosis (can now
detect a 1 mm diameter hole in the system)
have been introduced.
• Certain diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) have
been added and others have been revised to
obtain a more reliable diagnosis.
• All cars that fulfill the LEV requirements are
fitted with a new ignition discharge module.
This can also be used with earlier Trionic 7
engines but the ignition discharge module
from earlier Trionic 7 engines can not be used
on cars that fulfill LEV requirements.
• The air-flushed injectors previously fitted have
been discontinued.
• An air distribution strainer is fitted under the
throttle body to improve the distribution of air
between the cylinders.
• Adaptations have been made for greater
power output.
• Exhaust valves are manufactured in nimonic
alloy to resist the thermal stress. They can be
identified by a 5 mm depression in the valve
disc similar to the Viggen.
• The spark plugs are platinum NGK PFR7 H-
10. This type of spark plug must be used only
in the engine variants we recommend.
(B205L, B205R, and B235R)
• A Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger is fitted to
B205R engines. This has a greater capacity
than the Garret GT17 that was fitted on the
B205L.
Note
The B205R must be driven on high octane fuel to
deliver the specified torque.
