We don't know if the oil is also a contributing factor but it is less likely.
What "could" have played a role might be the use of Saabs semi synthetic oil in the cars and the customers being lulled into beleive that the car had full synthetic oil in there, and driven the car too far between changes without really knowing.
It is nomerous customers that tells me the dealer used "full" synthetic oil in their car and when I check the old receipts, the oil part number is for the semi synthetic. Still a good oil after what lab test reveals but not a fully synthetic one.
If the oil quality would be the only factor in this we would have seen V6 engines falling victims to it too, wouldn't we?
One thing we know for sure though is that people that change the oil more often (5K miles, 6 month intervals) using regular, semi or full synthetic oil seem to have less to no sludge problems and the engine is clean as a whistle inside.
After all, I have a bunch of customers where when I check inside the oil pan, it is no signs of sludge whatsoever.
