Cat Converter - RED HOT!

Approx five miles down the road after degreasing my engine, my car ('88 900T) started hesitating and bucking. Initially I thought it was nothing more than a little water in the intake, so I continued driving. The hesitation/bucking worsened and it finally got to the point where I couldn't keep up with traffic. I pulled to the side of the road and continued to keep the engines revs up - still thinking that water in the intake was my problem. Approx ten seconds later I smelled something burning and saw smoke coming from beneath the car. I immediately shut things down and hopped out to check the damage - that's when I saw the converter glowing cherry red. I later had the thing towed to my driveway where I was barely able to get the car into the garage under its own power.
Have I done PERMANENT DAMAGE to something other than the cat? Any guesses as to what happened - water in the distributor causing no spark in the chamber leading to raw fuel entering the cat? Please help - any responses are greatly appreciated.
Matt
