sounds like a solid theory to me...fuel entering a hot exhaust will still burn, causing it to get even hotter...you may have damaged the interior of the cat, i am into my saab for performance, so a punch and hammer have seen that the inside of my cat is nothing more than a hollow tube...however the proper thing is to get the car running again, then check to make sure the CO2 is and HC's are still within range(a 4-gas analysizer will be needed for that)
