Methanol, Ethanol and Isopropanol get lower as more carbons are added to the chain. That means that methanol should be best at dissolving in water. On the other hand, isopropanol will mix best with gasoline, and methanol least well. The more carbons in the molecule the better it mixes with gasoline. Remember you want to remove the water by dissolving it in the gasoline/alcohol mixture, so you need enough some kind of alcohol to do this. It works by hydrogen-bonding the water molecule to the oxygen of the alcohol, which can dissolve in the gasoline due to the carbon chain.
As a chemist, I buy what is in the store and only use it occasionally when the gas tank is nearly empty and the car has sat outside in changing temperature conditions - the water vapor in the air gets pulled into the tank when the temperature gets cold and condenses on the walls.
The best protection is to keep the gas tank full under such circumstances - then you won't have any problem.
