Hi, Sud.
My Swedish Beastie is an '87 900T with 160K on it. This summer I did a bunch of SPG9 mods to it. I first put in the Stage II APC box, which gave me just-into-the-redzone boost. I have the SPG9 balanced/matched injector set and I installed them when I put in the RRFPR as the next phase. When I did the injectors and RRFPR, it took me halfway into the redzone, though there was some twitchiness to the boost caused by the APC doing its knock-sensing thing. After that, I installed the SPG9 AID, and I could hold top-of-redzone steady boost once it was installed and tuned. I later replaced my hooter and wastegate actuator with SPG9 components and turned the Wide Open Throttle boost down to 2/3 redzone max, and I'm happy there.
Anyway, I really like all those SPG9 mods. For the most part, they were easy to install and each gave me definite performance enhancements. One thing I noticed on my car was that after I replaced the injectors, the engine was quieter -- my original injectors were noisy and I didn't realize it until they were gone. I've also noticed better fuel economy now, averaging around 30 mpg on the highway, where I only got 28 or so before. (Much of that is likely due to timing changes with the AID, but some is also a result of the fuel mods.)
You said you had an APC box (I presume from SPG9?) but you didn't say which one you got. If it's the Stage I, you can probably get away with keeping the stock injectors. If you have the Stage II, I'd recommend you get the larger blue injectors with the RRFPR. In either case, I'd recommend the AID -- it's a wonderful device which gives a smoothly-tapered boost retard function and allows you up to 6 degrees more of initial timing advance. It was definitely worth the money as far as upgrades go.
You don't have to worry about "detonating your cylinders" if you don't buy any of these add-on performance parts. If all you do is put on the APC box, your car will be fine... it just won't get the maximum potential from your engine and that APC. The upgraded APC still protects your engine from detonation using the knock sensor, just as the OEM APC did, so don't worry.
If you do the mods for more fuel and better timing control (RRFPR, injectors, and AID) you'll be able to get and sustain higher boost, thus get a little more horsepower, and you might get smoother and more economical cruise performance as a bonus. It's not cheap, though... I spent around $1100 for all my SPG9 stuff. (As I said, I got the hooter and wastegate controller, too.) But having done it, I'm happy with what it's done for my Beastie, and I had fun doing it.
How much you add on or customize your car is really up to you -- it depends on how much performance you want, how much work you want to do, and how much money you want to spend on the car. But don't feel pressured into buying something out of a sense of fear -- that if you don't get new injectors, you'll damage the engine. That's really not anything to be concerned about. The only real consideration is what you want over how much you want to pay.
