Mike,
As far as the car grinding when cold into second, just about all old saab 900's do this in cold climates. Just make sure that you let the car warm up for a few minutes before you drive it, and then shift it gingerly into second gear. Sometimes it helps to pause a second before trying to ge it into second, or letting the shifter center itself in neutral, and then trying to get it into second. I agree with the others that a worn clutch pedal could cause your problems of going into reverse. The clevis pin attaches the clutch pedal to the rod that goes directly into the master cylinder. After a while, this clevis pin wears an elongated hole in the clutch pedal, so it therefore doesn't engage the clutch 100%. I would check that, and if that is worn out, you can buy a new clutch pedal for around 40 bucks. Also make sure that your clutch system is bled (air in the system will cause bad shifting). I don't know, but a bad motor mount(s) or misaligned shifter alignment may cause the car to not engage reverse. I would check all those too.
Good luck, and if you have any questions as to how to adjust the shifter linkage, just make another post, and i'm sure someone will be glad to explain it.
Jake
