When you say it won't go into reverse, does that mean that it grinds? If so, the problem is probably with the clutch shaft bearing or a clutch that isn't disengaging completely.
Check for a worn hole in the clutch pedal and clevice as others have suggested. The fix is to drill out and either install a bushing, use a larger clevice pin, or weld and redrill. A few bucks should get it fixed, even if you have to take it to a machine shop to have them drill it out and install a bushing.
A bad clutch shaft bearing will cause grinding going into reverse and also cause poor shifting in other gears. The bearing costs about $5 and replacment requires that the clutch be removed. It's a reasonable DIY job. Get the Bentley manual for details. The clutch spacer tool can be made from a length of #8 bare copper wire and a prybar to get the clutch shaft and clutch shaft bearing out can be made from a length of 1" or 1.25" square steel tubing. The latter tool isn't absolutely needed, but it does make things go more easily and it will come in handy for when you need a long cheater to get some extra leverage.
However, if the transmission whines, particularly in 3/4/5 above about 30 mph, then you probably have a bad pinion bearing. If so, things get expensive fast. If not, then the fix will probably be only a few dollars if you can do the work yourself.
