that is kind of how they work but it sounds like yours needs a little adjustment and the vacuum modulator checked. I have had a couple of auto trans ( one turbo ). i'd suggest getting a full auto trans service. (bands, fluid flush etc) and refill with a high quality synthetic. the worst problem with them....well next to worst problem...is the torque convertor and seals etc. 15$ of parts and 600 labor. on a last note...your trans will puke very quickly if you ask it to absorb the full output very much. it will be your trans that dies....not your engine. the engine is almost indestructible in comparison. you would be well advised to drop the boost max to just under red. a good mech can set that for you. your trans will thank you and you will still have plenty of power for emergencies.
