Possible problems with first Automatic

I've been driving a 5 spd '87 900S and I love it, but soon it's going to be my daughter's car. I came across a 1988 Turbo and thought the price was so good I couldn't turn it down, although I was reluctant about the automatic. It drove well during the test phase with the exception of a few minor things such as rear shock bushings, exhaust hittiing the bottom of the car, etc. I was driving it yesterday and wanted to see how the Turbo ran so I nailed it from a rolling stop. It took off pretty well but to my surprise, it didn't seem like it wanted to shift (strike that- it didn't shift), it just kept revving and revving (tach went into the red, and so did turbo boost)until I lifted my foot off the gas. Now I'm not familiar with Saab automatics, but that doesn't strike me as right. The guy I bought it from says this is normal behavior for turbo autonmatics, but I think if that were the case, there'd be a lot of wrecked engines out there. Also, when driving along at cruising speed, it doesn't seem to want to kick down to passing gear when I punch it. Not that I will be continuing this behavior, but I do want to make sure it's right. Also, there is a hissing sound that seems to be coming from the temp sensor on the head, and the temp guage is erratic. Someone clue me in please.
