there's clutch on the compressor...what's turning may well be just the undriven part. Running w/o belt ensures compressor clutch won't engage and throw belt or stop engine, smoke belt, yada yada yada. Of course if you don't turn on the switch it can't happen, right?
My take on A/C compressors is they're handy to have in certain high humidity conditions, i.e., they make good interior defrosters with reheat, even in the winter. And operating them every 10-20 days is a good thing. And waiting for Spring isn't necessarily a good idea for two reasons: When the weather turns everybody and his mother wants their A/C to work and prices go up and wait may be longer than doing it now.
Second, the longer the system goes w/o refrigerant and is perhaps unpressurized and subject to moisture, the more corrosion and problems you'll have when and if you decide to replace the compressor.
Bottom line, if the compressor is good, it's a good idea to fix leaks and pressurize it NOW rather than later. And if it's bad, it's still a good idea to fix it now and minimize cost to fix it later. In any case, replace the receiver/drier and consider replacing the expansion valve/filter.
