I think there was a cable change >87; at least the replacement cables the dealer sold me for my 84 were different/plastic/teflon?-lined when I had to replace my cables because they were corroded at the caliper end. The calipers weren't a problem but I resealed the pistons and replaced the dustboots and lubed the internal screw anyway. Chances are your problem is with the bushing/O-ring that seals the ebrake shaft into the front caliper.
I've not had cable problems on my 87 since OEM although I have rebuilt the front calipers five-six years ago just to preclude this problem.
FWIW, I believe most of the problems with these calipers has to do with dirt and grease buildup on the ebrake shaft as it gozinta the caliper. The original maintenance instruction with my 84 was to lube the yoke/cylinder every 5k miles (yeah right!) and check for buildup at the ebrake shaft. When this didn't happen (duh!) the shaft eventually froze up and the front brakes seized when the ebrake was applied.
