When brakes break.....

Today as I was on the highway testing out my new AID, I noticed a grinding sound comming from the front wheels. I carefully went home, jacked up the car and removed the tires. I can see that the brake pads are gone, but I dont know how to tell if the rotors are ok. In particular, there is a lip on all the rotors on the outer and inner edges. Is this normal wear or are these things way beyond destoryed. In the case that they are gone, where can I get rotors for a good price. How much will this job cost if I a) do it myself, or b) have it professionally done? Thanks a lot.
