The light is activated when the fluid level in the reservoir is low, so the first thing to do is refill it with DOT 4 brake fluid. If the reservoir got low enough to allow air to get into one or more brake lines, then they must be bled.
The cause is either a leak in the brake system, leak in the clutch hydraulic system (they use the same reservoir), or just worn pads. As the pads wear the pistons in the calipers move to provide more volume for the system so the reservoir level will drop.
The places where leaks are most likely to occur include the calipers on each wheel, clutch slave cylinder, or clutch master cylinder.
