HELP!!! TIMING CHAIN STUCK

To make a long story short, I accidentally cranked the engine with the timing chain and camshaft sprocket on the shaft, but not bolted on. So the sprocket and chain flew off the shaft and about 4 inches into the engine. What a stupid mistake!!! Anyways, I was able to remove the sproket off of the chain, but the chain is slightly tangled down in the crankshaft part of the engine. Would it be possible to simply turn the crankshaft counterclockwise while an assistant pulls on the chain to "back it out" of where it got tangled? Do I need to turn the pulley counterclockwise, or the crankshaft mounting bolt? Will I damage something by doing this? Any advise would be extremely appreciated!!!
