Dear Saabites,
So I take out my starter to replace it and what do I find? A wiring mess that blew my mind... under the rubber intake there is a grey plastic harness attachment that links the chassis to the engine wiring. The location of this wiring junction is noted by in this photo (thanks to Dana for posting his webpage with pics that I stole this from). Anyway the lower section of the wiring harness must have been too close to the starter because all of the wire casings are gone the wires are just bare, and several of them are broken. I can't even believe the car kept running under these conditions. Actually it was giving me problems including what I think is a bad starter. How to proceed? Should I strip back the outer black casing and try to patch it up or just install a new harness? Its the lower part that runs down to the chassis that is shot... not the upper that attaches to the engine. I've noticed rotten wire casing in other spots where it gets hot too... is this a systemic problem on older Saabs?
