You'll probably find that the price of part for the stainless steel downpipe will make your heart skip a couple of beats, too.
You may find that the flare joint between the downpipe and converter is cracked. I had this problem on my '88 900S. The local dealer back in Syracuse recommended that I go to Cole Muffler and have them weld new flare joints on the cat and on the downpipe. It cost me $35 and would probably be still be working if the car hadn't gone to the great beyond before I left Syracuse.
Cole had done a lot of work for the Syracuse dealer. Ask George at the parts counter (say Hi to him for me - the Atlanta guy), he's the one who told me to go to Cole. Cole will have to order the flare joints, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than a new downpipe.
