Well, after putting off the installation, after having the replacement rack on hand for over a year, I finally tackled it yesterday. If you have all the tools, it's very doable. You'll need 19mm and 22mm open-end wrenches to remove the tie-rod ends and 16mm & 18mm open (or flair) wrenches to remove the lines. I followed the directions from Ywan Mason (found on this site) and they were perfect. He recommended buying a 16/18mm combination wrench from Sears and cutting it half. I did that and the "stubbies" worked fine while being "motivated" by a lever of some sort.
It is a very messy job. I'd recommend putting cardboard or newspaper down, wheel-to-wheel, firewall to bumper, to catch the grease globs.
Some guys claim to have spent hours wrestling the old rack out from under the car. Following Ywan's instructions, it took me all of ten minutes AFTER everything was disconnected (on my '88 Plain-Jane 900). If you can't find Ywawn's write-up, let me know and I'll send it to you. By-the-way, don't forget to run six quarts of PS fluid through the pump (and into a pan) after removing the old rack (before installing the new one!). This will ensure that any small metal filings are purged so that the new rack's seals won't wear out in 10k miles.
I purchased the rebuilt rack from Andrews in Princeton, Mn. They were the cheapest I found and did not require a core exchange. Apparently they have tons of old Saab steering racks laying around. . .imagine that! :-) (Andrews Phone#: 800.882.7220)
