I donot replace the 17mm nut with a 14mm nut. I just turn the bolt around so that the 14mm bolt head is in the tight spot. The plastic cover I am refering to is the cover over the clutch on manual trans cars or the cover over the torque converter on auto trans cars. To install the starter just fit it in place and tighten the bolts up. The starter drive gear is self engaging.
