Alternator, Pivot and Tensioner Function. ALSO Uncooperative Compressor bracket bolt
This weekend while changing out the water pump on my ‘92S, my alternator proved to be the biggest uncooperative element, adding extra hours to what should have been maybe a four-hour job. Granted I’m slow and this is my first water pump and I’m replacing some heater hoses that go under plumbing that has to be moved, so I realize it’s a slow go. Two days later, the job is still incomplete. Good thing I don’t need the car to drive to work. My wife keeps reminding me “it’s a hobby” trying to give me some encouragement.
The Bentley is devilishly imprecise on describing the loosening of the alternator pivot bolt and removal of the long tensioner bolt. In trying to “hold” the pivot nut at the bottom left side of the alt with a swivel socket while simultaneously cranking the bolt on the right side with a ratchet wrench took way long. Removing the long tensioner bolt on the top of the alt seemed counter intuitive to simply loosening the nut on the left side of the bolt mechanism that secures the alt to the slide mechanism. That bolt wouldn’t budge so I unscrewed the long tensioner bolt and removed it. With the combination of loosening the pivot bolt somewhat and removing the long tensioner bolt did allow the alternator to swing in toward the block enough to remove the alt belts. Also, when I put everything back together when I'm done, do I get the pivot bolt tight, then adjust the belt tension with the tensioner bolt?.
The 12MM bottom bolt securing the compressor bracket to the block also would not budge which prevented me from gaining a clear visual on the water pump. I tried swivel sockets, combination wrenches even bought a longer crescent wrench to get more torque but that did fit into the restricted area. Is there something else behind the bracket I’m not aware of preventing removal of that last remaining bolt? That sure would have made access to the water pump, heater hoses etc. a lot easier. Maybe would have made the total job go faster too. Good thing I’m not being paid by the hour, I’d be a millionaire by now.
