It is the roll of the dice in many ways. A 14 year old car with a 140,000 miles (any car be it SAAB, Volvo Subauru) can easily nickle and dime you to death if you want to keep it in good form. It easly could prove a disaster. However, if it has been well maintained to date and you give it reasonable maintainance there is no reason why it can't go many problem free miles. I purchased a 85 turbo a number of years back with just under 130,000. It now has about 175,000 and all I have done other than rountine maintainance is right wheel bearing, balljoints, muffler, front shocks (and only because they had been replaced with a cheap set one of which failed) and font brake pads. I don't consider that to bad for a period of 5+ years given the mileage and age of the car. However, I should also point out that the sunroof is inop and I need to replace the heater valve.
Depending on the condition of the car and what it needs $2000 about right. If your going to do much driving in the snow get snow tires. Over the long run they really aren't as they seem.
