It may be as simple as fixing the reverse lockout rod on the shift lever. I had an '87 five speed transported by car moving company. I'm sure the driver for this lash up would make your wife look like Einstein by comparison. He had managed to detatch the rod that goes down the middle of the shift lever from the ring that you lift to get the car into reverse. He did this while struggling to get the car out of reverse with turning the key on. I'm sure there are other ways to break this thing.
There is a small diameter rod that goes from the ring you lift to the bottom of the shift lever where it is supposed to lift a pin. If this pin is not raised, the car won't go into reverse. I fixed this myself with a used shift lever for about $15.
Hope your problem is this simple.
